Housed in the picturesque UC Santa Barbara campus, REAL AI is a consortium of three fearless researchers got together to building Artificial Scientific Intelligence (ASI). Over the past century, computers have revolutionized scientific practices, and many anticipate that AI will bring another acceleration in scientific discoveries. However, current AI technologies rely heavily on a data-intensive approach, where improvements come from more data. This method is not viable in many scientific domains, as data collection, cleaning, and processing at such scales are prohibitively costly. Recognizing this limitation, our vision is to integrate our complementary AI expertise—generative AI (Jeong), geometric AI (Miolane), and multimodal AI (Qin)—to significantly reduce the data requirement. We believe true scientific intelligence will emerge from tackling the data efficiency problem from multiple angles and collaborating with scientists from diverse disciplines. Our unique blend of AI expertise, combined with UCSB’s excellence in fundamental sciences and collaborative culture, will pioneer the development of ASI and unlock a new era of scientific discovery 🚀
